Bertelsmann Leadership Transition: Thomas Rabe's Successors Announced (2025)

A major shakeup is coming to the European media landscape! The future of Bertelsmann and RTL Group is about to take a new direction.

Bertelsmann, a media powerhouse, has announced its successor plan for Thomas Rabe, the long-standing CEO. As of January 1, 2027, Thomas Coesfeld will step into Rabe's shoes, becoming the new Chairman and CEO of Bertelsmann. And alongside him, Clément Schwebig will take the reins as CEO of RTL Group.

Coesfeld's journey within Bertelsmann is an impressive one. Starting with the Printing Group in 2018, he quickly rose through the ranks, joining the music division BMG in 2020 and becoming its CEO by July 2023. Now, he'll continue his role as BMG's boss while also taking on the dual position as Bertelsmann's leader.

But here's where it gets interesting: Schwebig, a French native, brings a wealth of experience from both RTL and Warner Bros. He's no stranger to the media industry, having held various management positions at RTL for over a decade before moving to Warner Bros. Discovery, where he most recently served as President and Managing Director for Western Europe and Africa.

And this is the part most people miss: when Rabe's contract ends on December 31, 2026, it will mark the conclusion of an impressive 15-year tenure as Chairman and CEO of Germany's largest media group. A true testament to his leadership and vision.

Rabe expressed his satisfaction with the board's decision, congratulating Coesfeld on his new role. "We've worked closely and with great trust for many years, and I'm committed to ensuring a seamless transition. Bertelsmann's future is in excellent hands with Thomas and his team," he said.

Rabe also highlighted Schwebig's expertise and insights, especially his understanding of the Asian growth markets, which aligns with Bertelsmann's expansion plans. "I know and value Clément Schwebig, and I'm excited to hand over the leadership of RTL Group to him," Rabe added.

During his time at Bertelsmann, Rabe, now 60, has successfully steered the legacy media organization towards content production. He's invested heavily in RTL's production subsidiary, Fremantle, which has produced a diverse range of content, from popular formats like Idol and Got Talent to the Oscar-winning film Poor Things. Additionally, he's focused on RTL+'s streaming platform, which has seen tremendous growth, surpassing 7 million paying subscribers this year.

So, what do you think about this leadership change? Will it bring fresh perspectives and innovations to the media industry? Or is it a risky move? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
