The R&A Unveils a New 'Last-Chance Qualifier' for The Open Championship 2026: A Chance for 12 Players to Earn Their Spot at Royal Birkdale
The R&A has announced a groundbreaking addition to The Open Championship, set to take place in 2026 at Royal Birkdale. In a move that will inject excitement and unpredictability into the historic tournament, a new 'Last-Chance Qualifier' will be introduced, offering 12 players a last-minute opportunity to secure their place in the 154th Open Championship. This thrilling development, unveiled on Tuesday, promises to elevate the fan experience and create a dramatic climax to golf's oldest major.
The 'Last-Chance Qualifier' will be held on Monday, July 13, with a unique twist: four groups will tee off between 7:30 and 8:03 a.m. local time. This 18-hole stroke-play event is designed to add tension and intrigue to the early stages of the tournament, providing fans with a front-row seat to high-quality, competitive golf. Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Chief Championships Officer at The R&A, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, 'This qualifier will generate drama and intrigue as players compete for the final place in the Championship. Every golfer who participates will have earned their right to be there, and we anticipate a thrilling conclusion to the Last-Chance Qualifier.'
The 12-player field will be determined through a fair and structured eligibility system, mirroring existing pathways into The Open. The invitations will be extended in the following order:
- The top two non-exempt players in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) as published on Monday, July 6.
- The runner-up in The Amateur Championship, provided they remain an amateur on Monday, July 13.
- Players who missed out on the playoff at Final Qualifying.
- Players who finished one position behind those who secured a place in The Open at Final Qualifying.
- Players who were tied for a qualifying place in Open Qualifying Series events (excluding Scotland) but did not qualify due to a lower OWGR ranking.
Given the expected high number of eligible golfers, invitations will be offered in order of exemption category until the field reaches 12. A reserve list will follow the same sequence, ensuring a fair process. The R&A emphasized that replacements can only occur in exceptional circumstances outside the published exemption structure.
The qualifier's impact extends to the tournament's reserve list. The first two reserves, competing in the Monday event, will retain their reserve status until the full field begins play on Thursday. The remaining reserve positions will be assigned based on the finishing order in the Last-Chance Qualifier, with OWGR rankings as a tiebreaker unless a playoff determines the lone qualifying berth. Any ties for the final place will be resolved in a playoff.
Players will be notified of their eligibility, with most confirmations expected on July 1, followed by additional spots being finalized after the July 6 OWGR release. This exciting new qualifier will set the stage for the season's final major, returning to the iconic Royal Birkdale, where Jordan Spieth claimed his third career major championship in 2017. The anticipation is building, and the golf world is eager to witness the drama unfold.
