D10 Sports GOLF ROUNDUP Toms says he'll play Presidents Cup The Plain Dealer Saturday, September 17, 2005 SOCCER Rovers re-sign Friedel Heart ailment treatable; he's out of hospital From wire reports David Toms was released from a Pittsburgh hospital Friday and plans to play in next week's Presidents Cup matches at Gainesville, despite being stricken by a heart problem during the first round of the 84 Lumber Classic. Toms, taken off the Nemacolin Woodlands resort course Thursday with what his caddie said was a rapid heartbeat, said in a statement issued by his charitable foundation that his problem is "treatable and curable." The condition supraventricular tachycardia, a general term for a rapid heart rate originating above the ventricles is not lifethreatening. Doctors told Toms it can be treated with medication or cured with minor surgery. The 38-year-old Toms grabbed his chest and complained about not being able to breathe properly halfway through his round and was taken off the course. PGA Tour Stuart Appleby, looking for his first victory since January, unleashed big drive after big drive during his sixth consecutive round in the 60s at the 84 Lumber Classic to open a oneshot lead over an equally long hitter, Chris Smith, and a very accurate Cameron Beckman at Farmington, Pa.

V. GENEJ. PUSKAR ASSOCIATED PRESS Stuart Appleby, teeing off on No. 17 Friday, brought some serious averaged 320.5 yards with his drives. Appleby's 6-under 66 on the long but not especially troublefilled Mystic Rock course put him at 11-under 133.

Beckman's 65 and Smith's 66 put them at 134, or two shots better than Craig Barlow, Joey Sindelar and Carl Pettersson. World Match Play Top-seeded Retief Goosen tied his World Match Play record with a 12-and-11 victory over Mark Hensby and will play U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell for a place in the final at Virginia Water, England. Campbell drew even with Steve Elkington at the 35th, winning at the 37th with a par to reach today's semifinals. In the other semifinal, Paul McGinley will play Angel Cabrera.

McGinley beat third-seeded AUTO RACING A win wallows in Wallace's mind instead of retirement It's been a long time since Rusty Wallace had a legitimate shot at a championship, and the longtime NASCAR star is excited by the prospect. Sure, this season is "Rusty's Last Call," his final year as a driver, but the 1989 champ of what was then the Winston Cup series, is thinking more about another title than his impending retirement. "This is my final season as a driver and I want to go out being remembered as a winner," Wallace said as the Penske Racing South team prepared his No. 2 Dodge for Friday's opening practice at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon. Wallace is one of the 10 drivers qualified for the second Chase for the Nextel Cup championship, and the first event of the 10-race playoff-style format is Sunday's Sylvania 300.

The 10 title contenders have had their points reset, with just 45 points separating leader Tony Stewart from 10th-place Ryan Newman. Wallace is third, just 10 points behind Stewart. It's been a fun season for the 49-year-old Wallace. He has been competitive in nearly every race and comes to New Hampshire with seven top fives and 14 top 10s in the first 26 races. Just as important, he is the only Cup regular who has been running at AUTO RACING NASCAR CHASE FOR THE NEXTEL CUP DRIVER From wire reports POINTS 1.

Team fails inspection: The No. 25 Chevrolet Hendrick Motorsports brought to New Hampshire International Speedway as the primary Nextel Cup car for Brian Vickers was in NASCAR's possession Friday after it failed inspection five times. "This was a brand new body that had never been raced," said Doug Duchardt, vice president. of development for the Hendrick team. The driver and team owner put the speculation to rest Friday, confirming that Harvick will be back in the No. 29 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet in 2006. Harvick stepped up to NASCAR's Nextel Cup Series with RCR after seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt was killed in the 2001 Daytona 500. Gordon looking ahead: Drivers Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are the highest-profile drivers to miss out on the 10-man, 10-race Chase, but Gordon fans were probably the most disappointed because he went into the race last Saturday night at Richmond with a chance to make it into the playoff-style format.

An ill handling car and a collision with the wall ended Gordon's hopes, though, leaving him 12th in the standings. "I don't really care where we end up in the standings, we just need to get prepared for next year," said Gordon. 2002: Tony Stewart, Pontiac 2001: Jeff Gordon, Chevrolet 2000: Bobby Labonte, Pontiac 1999: Dale Jarrett, Ford 1998: Jeff Gordon, Chevrolet 1997: Jeff Gordon, Chevrolet 1996: Terry Labonte, Chevrolet 1995: Jeff Gordon, Chevrolet 1994: Dale Earnhardt, Chevrolet 1993: Dale Earnhardt, Chevrolet 1992: Alan Kulwicki, Ford 1991: Dale Earnhardt, Chevrolet 1990: Dale Earnhardt, Chevrolet 1989: Rusty Wallace, Pontiac 1988: Bill Elliott, Ford 1987: Dale Earnhardt, Chevrolet 1986: Dale Earnhardt, Chevrolet 1985: Darrell Waltrip, Chevrolet 1984: Terry Labonte, Chevrolet 1983: Bobby Allison, Buick 1982: Darrell Waltrip, Buick 1981: Darrell Waltrip.
